Frequently Asked Questions
What is the timeline?
We are set in 2023. Our timeline is 25 years after the Battle of Hogwarts. Wizards have enjoyed an untempered stretch of peace and tranquility, but they are beginning to forget the pain of the first and second wizarding wars. Some in the wizarding world are becoming restless, and seeds of apathy have dulled the effectiveness of the Ministry of Magic. Strange things have been happening, and wizards are disappearing. Is the time ripe for a new generation of discontent?
Can I hypergrid in from another grid?
Yes, we welcome hypergrid visitors. Our hypergrid address is grid.kitely.com:8002:Hogwarts Forever
How do I make my avatar look better?
We provide a number of free resources to get you started in creating an avatar.
There are a number of mesh avatars, skins, shapes, hair, clothing, and other items on the Kitely Market. You can purchase items from the Kitely Market through your Paypal account.
There are also a lot of free resources around the hypergrid. One way to find these resources is the Opensim World directory. Click on HG to jump to that location, or copy the address and put it in the search bar of your map. You must be wearing all opensource items to use the hypergrid in Kitely. You can do this by replacing your current avatar with your original Kitely provided avatar.
What is IC and OOC?
In character, or IC, is anything that happens in play to and by the characters. Out of character, or OOC, is anything that happens to or with players behind the scenes.
Open chat on the grounds of Hogwarts school is always in-character. Diagon Alley and London may be OOC or IC, but if you are a player, please be sensitive and helpful to guests with questions. Hogsmeade and other areas of the sim are IC-preferred, but you may drop to OOC if no one else is around. Visitors on the sim are allowed to be OOC at all times, and players should treat them as special guests. If they are particularly disruptive, do not engage them, and instead contact a staff member.
If you wish to speak OOCly with someone in an IC roleplay area, please privately message them. In an emergency, such as suddenly leaving a scene because of IRL issues, you may make a note of this to other players in open chat by wrapping your message in parentheses, such as (( Sorry, must go)). Please avoid using parenthetical OOC in open chat as much as possible.
How do I run my own plots?
Players do not need approval for personal plot stories. Personal plots do not affect other characters and players, unless they have willingly consented and verbally agreed to participate. All players are expected to play fairly, not infringe on the roleplay experience of others, and include other players as much as possible. If you would like help with your personal plot, please contact a member of the staff.
Can I start a club or secret society?
Clubs and secret societies are encouraged. Please ask permission to start a club from the Headmistress, and try to include at least one Hogwarts staff member as a club sponsor. Secret societies may be started by any player at any time, but we request that the staff be made aware of any secret societies with at least two people via notecard so we can include them in sim roleplay plots.
Can I be a dark wizard?
Dark wizards are special characters, and can only be recognized though application and approval as a special character. Dark wizards may only play out major plots that have been approved by Roswenthe Blackwell. A major plot is one that affects other characters and players. Players may play self-serving characters, characters of ambiguous morality, or that may be swayed by a leader with dark intentions throughout the normal roleplay process.
Can I rez items for RP?
You must be in the Hogwarts Forever group to rez objects. As long as objects are PG-rated, you may rez items if you clean them up when leaving for the day.
Can I use alts?
We are fine with the use of alts. Alts may not be used to cause any harm or grief to the sim, to harass other players, or to play multiple special characters.
What is the system time?
Most opensim users use SLT, which is Second Life Time. Kitely runs on SLT. SLT is in the same time zone as Pacific Time. However, our events can happen in any time zone, as we have users from all over the world.
Can I own my own house or RP shop?
You are welcome to run an RP shop in Hogsmeade or London. There are no RP shops available in Diagon Alley at this time. Please contact Roswenthe Blackwell for more information. RP shops may be reset if player is inactive for several months.
At this time, houses are for active players who regularly contribute to the activity of the sim. There is no cost to rent. We are adding houses to the build and more may become available.
Can I run private roleplay scenes with my friends?
Any area that is open to all group members is open for play. Other players cannot demand another player leave an area so they can have private roleplay. Private houses are private areas, and should be entered with permission from the renter.
How do I join others who are already roleplaying in an open area?
Players are asked to join a scene in progress with respect to the other players. It is fine if you don’t know what is going on, but questions as to what is happening should be asked in character or roleplayed as if your character does not know what is happening. If you ask via IM, you may not use that information in play.
Can I have a family?
Yes, family RP is welcome.
How are head students and prefects chosen?
The Headmaster and the OOC staff will choose a male head student and a female head student each year. Head students keep the position for no more than one school year, and may be replaced if inactive for more than a month. Head students are expected to lead the student body much like a student body president, roleplay with many different students, lead the prefects, and OOCly remain in contact with the staff to help foster roleplay opportunities among the students.
Heads of Houses will choose two prefects from their house to lead their house, though HoHs must gain approval from the Headmaster and OOC staff before announcing them to any student. Prefects keep their position for a year, but may remain in position for longer if no one else is a suitable candidate or wishes to participate. Prefects may be replaced at any time for inactivity. Prefects act as leaders for their house both ICly and OOCly, and are expected to encourage roleplay for all levels of students in their house.
How does Hogwarts Forever handle problem players?
If you respect others around you, you should have no problem roleplaying at Hogwarts Forever.
Players will receive warnings for minor OOC infractions, but a large number of warnings is likely to result in permanent removal from Hogwarts Forever. These include OOC chatter in an IC-only area, repeated complaints, OOC gossip, and minor verbal harassment. Many infractions, such as dress code, are subject to in character discipline with a loss of points, detention, suspension, or expulsion.
Major infractions include griefing, extended OOC verbal harassment, and threatening another player. These result in an immediate ban, the length of which will be determined by the severity of the situation. These also will result in the instant and permanent removal of any IC positions, such as Hogwarts staff, Ministry of Magic leadership, student leadership, or others that involve directing other players.
How can I help out at Hogwarts Forever?
We are happy if you just want to roleplay and create a fun experience with others.
If you would really like some ways to help, you can donate in one of the donation boxes around the sim. This goes to pay rent, as well as for new buildings and decor.
You can join Opensim World and give us a vote and a comment, which propels our location higher in the rankings and brings in more people from the hypergrid. We'd love if you also voted from the button on the front page of this website.
